Born July 13, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. Diploma from Port Washington High School, Port Washington, Wis. in 1966. B.A. degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1974. J.D. degree from Santa Clara University Law School, Santa Clara, California in 1981.

Enlisted in U.S. Air Force in 1968. Honorably discharged 1971 at rank of Sergeant.

Admitted to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court 1987, U.S. 9th Circuit 1983, U.S. 7th Circuit 1992, California 1982, Wisconsin 1992
